Bankrupt man sets all his belongings on fire so they can’t be seized by bailiffs

A bankrupt man set fire to his own belongings in a £35,000 ($47,500) removal van - then stood drinking a cup of tea as he waited for police to arrive.

65-year-old John Cartwright has been told by a judge that he faces a long prison sentence after becoming furious while having his property repossessed.

He apparently poured petrol into the back of the van outside his home in St Dennis, Cornwall and destroyed some of his own belongings in the process, saying:

"If I can’t have my stuff, no-one can."

As he waited for police to arrive, he stood casually outside and enjoyed a cup of tea. He was then arrested and charged with one count of arson.
