Cyntoia Brown, who was prostituted when she was just 16 years old, has spent 13 years in prison for murdering her abuser. She was sentenced to life in prison in Tennessee, without parole, after she was tried as an adult in Tennessee for the killing .
Now a petition, which as received over 337,000 signatures so far, has been setup on MoveOn.org to try to get Brown released from prison.
Once the petition gets as many signatures as possible, it is hoped it will be given the so that it can be presented to Bill Haslam, the Governor of Tennesse, to consider clemency. The petition says:
"Since 2004, Cyntoia has been working diligently to make amends for her crime. Today, Cyntoia is an incredibly intelligent, compassionate, and resilient young woman
As she has progressed in her rehabilitation, Cyntoia has served as a beacon of light in the prison environment."
When just aged 16, Cyntoia was sex-trafficked by a pimp and had to endured physical, verbal and sexual abuse, before being solicited by 43-year-old Johnny Allen, an estate agent from Nashville. She was convicted of his murder in 2004.
Celebrities such as Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, and Kim Kardashian have spoken out about the case and are demanding justice for Cyntoia.
"The system has failed. It’s heart breaking to see a young girl sex trafficked then when she has the courage to fight back is jailed for life! We have to do better & do what’s right. I’ve called my attorneys yesterday to see what can be done to fix this."
Many people are also seeking an official government pardon for Brown from US President Donald Trump.
